Renée’s Artist Statement: I wanted to visualize a human moment of Matilda working in her home by candlelight, with the silhouette of the local church behind her, perhaps the bells ringing, alerting her it’s getting late and time for bed soon. The act of carving this was self-regulating for me and made me think about how Matilda liked to watercolor in addition to activism. I felt connected to her as I took this down time for art, to sustain the hard work, using my skills to repeat her words, inviting them back into local dialogue, to see what they’re capable of doing…
