We are pleased to announce that the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation will be hosting The Matilda Effect Series by artist Lynette Charters. In her words, “The "Matilda Effect" was a label originally created by historian Margaret W. Rossiter, referencing Suffragist and columnist Matilda Joslyn Gage (1826-1898) who publicized the work of important but forgotten women in history. The Matilda Effect Series celebrates women’s history and achievements which are generally less documented, less compensated, and often appropriated, leading us to believe that women are only useful in supporting roles and domestic settings. This series is painted on repurposed household objects, to provide context to the tension between how women are traditionally seen and the trailblazers they really are.”

Engage with Gage - NY Humanities Reading and Discussion Session

Join the Reading and Discussion Series Today

In one woman, there are many aspects, and this was perhaps never more true than when discussing Matilda Joslyn Gage. In her life we see a writer, an abolitionist, a suffragist, an activist, an educator, and yet, so much more. Her radical voice caused her to be written out of history, but this reading and discussion session will bring her writing and ideas into our modern political landscape. In her radical thought from over 100 years ago, there is much to reflect upon still today. What does equality mean? What does it mean to have a vote? What does it mean to have a voice? How can we use these tools in our lives today in pursuit of liberty and a more just world?

Join us in a reading and discussion group where we will delve into the writing and ideas of this radical woman. Meetings will take place each month at the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center in Fayetteville, NY. This location will allow participants to not only learn about Matilda throught literature and discussion, but through the immersion of seeing her life through the lens of her home, her lifestyle, artifact collections, and additional library resources.

All books are available through our bookstore, if you would like your own copy to make notations and marks. If you would rather borrow a book, we will have copies available for lending, however you will need to leave payment information, should you forget to return the books. (Happens to everyone!) These lending copies are not to be marked upon and will need to be returned at the end of that book’s session. Once the previous book is returned, the next book will be lent out. The first book in the series, Born Criminal, will be available for pick-up starting in February. Get a head-start on the reading for the first meeting in April.

Books for the R&D Session:
Born Criminal by Angelica Shirley Carpenter (April 10, 2025 @ 6pm)
The Political Life and Times of Matilda Joslyn Gage by Mary E. Cory (May 8, 2025 @ 6pm)

High Bridge by Michael Miller (July 10, 2025 @ 6pm)
Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts (August 14, 2025 @ 6pm)

Discussions will be led by experienced facilitator, Eileen Angelini, and will center on women's suffrage, abolitionism, the Underground Railroad, Indigenous rights, political activism, social activism, local Central New York history, Erie Canal history, LGBTQ+ history, impacts of gender, and how those connect not only through Matilda's writings, but also those of her son-in-law L. Frank Baum, the creator of the Wizard of Oz. The Gage Center features rooms touching on these themes, bringing a unique immersive element to the R&D Sessions. We are excited to announce that some of these esteemed authors will be joining us for their discussion session.
