Women and Girls in Science
Every February 11, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is commemorated as a UN initiative to highlight the key role that women play in the scientific community and promote girls' access to the world of science.
This interest in making women scientists in the country visible arose after researching the “Matilda effect.” This concept was coined in honor of Matilda Joslyn Gage, a suffragette and abolitionist, who in her essay “Woman as an Inventor” (1883), described the lack of recognition or denial of the contribution of women scientists in works that were attributed to male colleagues.
