OCTOBER 6, FRIDAY Evening: |
|
|
|
The Maid of Arran Production by Jason Cicci of the Irish musical melodrama The Maid of Arran by L. Frank Baum, which Baum wrote in 1881 and then starred-in while he courted and then married Matilda's daughter, Maud Gage, in 1882. This is the first time in 125 years that this play has been produced in Central New York. Join us for a rollicking good time while benefiting the Gage Foundation! Reception follows. |

OCTOBER 7, SATURDAY Morning: |
|
|
Seminar: The Spectrum of Oz Scholars Hearn and Fricke and Baum descendant Hudson explore the cultural
impact of the fourteen Oz books and their author. From Baum’s editorials
recommending extermination of the Sioux nation in 1890 to the publication of the
Great American Fairy Tale in 1900 and the 1939 film, Oz provides a unique lens
for examining the American psyche. This event is funded through a grant from the
New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment
for the Humanities. |

SATURDAY Afternoon: |
|
|
Matilda Joslyn Gage Home Restoration Tours The Gage Home is being restored as closely as possible to 1887, the year Oz
author (and Gage son-in-law) L. Frank Baum photographed the home’s exterior and
interior with a recently purchased Kodak home camera. Baum married the youngest
Gage daughter, Maud, in the home’s front parlor, and visited often during the
five years the couple lived in Syracuse, including an extended visit during the
summer of 1887 when he took the photos. The Gage Home is the only home in the
country open to the public where Baum spent time. |

Matilda Joslyn Gage Library of Feminism Grand Opening, Tours and
Baum Exhibit The first feminist library in the country, owned and operated by the Gage
Foundation, will be opened to the public. Includes Gage/Baum family papers and
artifacts, along with the extensive Fred Meyer collection of Oz memorabilia. |

Traveling Oz Exhibit Fayetteville-area businesses will be displaying items from the Fred Meyer
collection of the Gage Foundation. Each locaiton will also have for sale one of
the 14 limited edition Oz books, each containing a special replica of L. Frank
Baum’s bookplate signed by Robert Baum, great-grandson of Baum and author of the
Oz book introductions. These collector’s editions will only be available at
these locations during The Wonderful Weekend of Oz! |

Yellow Brick Road Quilt Show Entry Towpath Quilt Guild |
Yellow Brick Road Quilt Show The Yellow Brick Road Challenge is a cooperative effort of Calico Gals, a
local quilting business, the Towpath Quilt Guild, and various highly-skilled
quilting artists throughout Central New York. The combined creative forces have
resulted in the donation of 42 original quilts which will be on display before
being sold to benefit the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation. |

Oz Childrens' Party - Come in Costume! A party celebrating Baum’s 150th birthday with crafts, activities and refreshments. Children are encouraged to come in costume. |

SPECIAL EVENT: Gage Documentary Film Premiere Sat. 4:00 PM Fayetteville Free Library The first public viewing of a preview of the upcoming feature-length documentary about the life and work of Matilda Joslyn Gage. Featured in the film will be legendary feminist icon Gloria Steinem, Oz historian Michael Patrick Hearn and descendants of Gage and Baum,”the Hon. Jocelyn Birch Burdick, Mac Hudson and Gita Dorothy Moreno. Producer Carey Graeber, who is President of New York Women in Film and Television, and producer/writer Mona Kanin will lead the session and talk about the making of the film. |

SATURDAY Evening: |

|
Holly Near Benefit Concert Singer Holly Near, together with song-writer and pianist John Bucchino, will
perform a benefit concert for the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation.
Near is an activist for social justice, using her music as a way to spread
messages of world peace and love. She will entertain us again (following her triumphant
2002 sold-out concert), with an uplifting evening featuring songs from her new
CD,
Show Up. The peace and social
justice words of the Oz books will join with Holly's music, encouraging us
to find ways that we can we work to create Gage’s vision of a transformed world. |

Fifth Annual Gage Foundation Benefit Auction The weekend will culminate in the Fifth Annual Gage Foundation Benefit
Auction, hosted by Judy Garland biographer and Oz historian John Fricke, at the
Wellington House in Fayetteville. Items for bid include travel packages, Oz
memorabilia, a Chanel watch, special donations from Gloria Steinem and Lily
Tomlin and other fine gifts just in time for the pre-holiday season. |
